about

If you're interested in the setting of this song: it's the white rocks of Les Calanques, south of France, a little fishing village called Morgiou. We (me and 'Moon') were rockclimbing there in February 1996. It's a stunningly beautiful place.

lyrics

White Rock Tree - Steve Merlin 1996/2003/2008

You took a picture of your wild escape
I wish I knew what you were up to
Far above what they call sensibility
You would prove that they were wrong about you

The snow-white rocks, they were like you
They seemed to come out of the blue
A crying seagull came to wave ‘insanity’
Just like me it loves the life inside your eyes

And if it weren’t for the wind, the sun would burn this place away
On this neverending winter’s day

We’re so far away from decency, so far away from dignity
We’ve found paradise in destiny

When you told me what they thought of you
You stand alone in your bravado
You took a picture of a white rock tree
Even a stone can bear intentionality

Far from war and hate and adultry, far from motorways and industry
You should never want to have to leave

And if it weren’t for the wind, the sun would burn your face away
On this neverending winter’s day
